To improve the socio-economic status of the people of Milenge anchored on quality infrastructure development and environmental sustainability.

Our Mission

To ensure effective performance in service delivery to achieve socio-economic empowerment, to provide a conducive living environment through cooperating with other stakeholders and the dissemination of information in order to improve the wellbeing of its people.

To promote socio-economic transformation in order to uplift the livelihoods of the people of Milenge district.

District Profile & History

Established in 1997, Milenge was carved out of Mansa District to promote decentralization and bring services closer to the people. Located as the most southerly district in Luapula Province, its southern border is defined by the Luapula River, forming the international boundary with the DRC.

Economy & Resources

Highly reliant on renewable natural resources. Dominant activities include farming (cassava) and fishing. The area features extensive woodland providing fuelwood, honey, and beeswax.

Demographics

Population: 56,543 (2022 Census). Most settlements are along the Lwela and Luapula River. While inhabited by Lunda-aligned groups, Bemba is the widely spoken language.

Regional Context

The topography is a gently undulating flat plateau with administrative headquarters at Milenge boma. Despite its resources, the district remains generally rural and faces challenges including poor road infrastructure, high poverty rates, and significant malaria prevalence.
